Actually, it’s not a joke, it’s the truth. :-(
Or is it?
A few months ago I was walking out to get the mail and I glanced down the street and within a flash, and just like that, I almost splattered myself in the driveway.
I thought to myself, why can’t I walk anywhere without tripping over my feet?
It’s not like I haven’t walked thousands of miles in my life.
Sometimes it is just a tiny little trip or stumble but a few times I have looked like roadkill!
Haste Makes Waste & Can Turn You Into A Meat Platter…
Truth be told, I’m not a dummy. I know how to walk perfectly, and I know exactly what I’m doing wrong.
I trip because I’m a fast-moving, multitasking, Type A maniac who hates to waste time.
So each & every time, it goes like this:
• I tell myself where I need to walk to, for example, I am going to take a walk in the woods.
• I head out the door with my phone in my hand and as I am looking at it while I walk, I am not paying attention and within a matter of seconds, I feel myself tripping and heading to the ground.
• Then, since I learned my lesson, if I am lucky enough to catch myself before I fall, I get a grip on the situation and walk like a normal person.
• The sad thing is, I love a really good quiet walk in the woods without trips.
This sounds like a metaphor for life that we can easily get caught up in:
– Have a great idea.
– Rush to get it started.
– Get impatient because it’s not moving fast enough.
– Overlook the most important aspects.
– Settle for a mediocre version (aka: walk with a bruised ego)
So if we know what we want, and we know what’s keeping us from getting there, why do we keep repeating the same story over & over again?
Because It Has To Do With Resistance!
I remember one when I was in my gym class, my trainer announced that we were going to be working on running a mile.
Ack!!
There was an immediate low-rolling grumble throughout the room.
Why the resistance to running a mile?
The instructor said, “You see…right there…whatever it is that made you resist the thought of running a mile is the same thing that’s holding you back with whatever you’re dealing with outside this room.”
Hmmmm…..I know at this point I realized I was tripping over my feet, running away and resisting change.
For me it was, “I can’t do it.”
The same thing I’ve been telling myself about taking a simple walk without tripping over my feet.
It’s all in the story we have been telling ourselves about why we can or cannot do something.
It’s All About The Story.
And if you want a better or different outcome, you’ve got to change your story.
I had to stop tripping over my feet, running away and resisting change.
Stop and think about why you’re tripping or stumbling over & over again.
Think about why you keep settling for:
– unhappy
– negative
– unenjoyable experiences
…….and decide right here and now that you deserve better.
You absolutely deserve that perfect walk in the woods!
So the next time you have a chance to run a mile, quit that job, start a business, take a trip, or do something that you’ll really enjoy, think about the story you’re telling yourself.
Are you happy with the story?
Or is it time to write a new one?
Think about what you really want. (Maybe you want to take the walk on a far away beach or in the mountains in Peru)
I said to myself, as I was setting up to attempt that walk without tripping over my feet, running away and resisting change, it’s much better to get in motion and fall than to just sit there!
This will scare the heck out of you, but it is so worth it!
The next time you’re up against resistance, know that it’s come to show you where you have the greatest opportunity for a big breakthrough.
And go for it.
Here’s to a new story!
Much love,
